FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP COMMUNITY SCHOOLS BEGIN ALUMINUM CAN RECYCLING PROGRAM

February 16, 2010, Indianapolis, Indiana – A partnership between The Aluminum Cans for Education Program and the Franklin Township Community School Corporation will allow the school corporation to raise money and to have a positive impact on the environment.

The Aluminum Cans for Education Program, an initiative established in 2007 by Indianapolis-based Schaffer Recycling, helps central Indiana schools raise money through the recycling of aluminum cans.  The program collects the aluminum from teachers, students, and members of the community who participate by depositing cans in special bins placed in Franklin Township Community School Corporation school parking lots.

“Community involvement is the backbone of this program.  In a time of forced spending cuts in school budgets, our initiative allows everyone an additional way to help fund school activities without affecting their wallets,” stated Tony Schaffer, owner of Schaffer Recycling.  “This program has a double impact on our community; it not only financially benefits area schools, but teaches our children that they can positively influence the environment through their actions.”

The Franklin Township Community School Corporation receives from the Aluminum Cans for Education Program a percentage of the gross revenue generated from recycling cans deposited in their bins.  There is no cost to the schools or the community to participate in the program, which is also operating at fifty other central Indiana schools and churches.
